The Epitas Research Lab is a part of Epitas Software LLP. The lab aims to work on research problems and innovative projects that extend the state of the art in robotics. The center’s research focuses in the areas of Mobile Robotics, Robotic Vision, Mechanism Design and Multi Robotic Systems. The lab is well equipped with robot platforms and advanced sensors and has been actively involved in bringing out new products to the market from the R&D desk.
Home automation or domotics is building automation for a home, called a smart home or smart house. A home automation system will control lighting, climate, entertainment systems, and appliances. It may also include home security such as access control and alarm systems. When connected with the Internet, home devices are an important constituent of the Internet of Things
Home automation can include the scheduling and automatic operation of water sprinkling, heating and air conditioning, window coverings, security systems, lighting, and food preparation appliances. Home automation may also allow vital home functions to be controlled remotely from anywhere in the world using a computer connected to the Internet. Besides the functions already mentioned, remote control can be extended to telephones and answering machines, fax machines, amateur radios and other communications equipment, and home robots such as automatic vacuum cleaners.
A home automation system typically connects controlled devices to a central hub or “gateway”. The user interface for control of the system uses wall-mounted terminals, tablet or desktop computers, a mobile phone application, or a Web interface, that may also be accessible off-site through the Internet.
The fundamental components of a well-designed home automation system include a computer (or computers) with the appropriate programming, the various devices and systems to be controlled, interconnecting cables or wireless links, a high-speed Internet connection, and an emergency backup power source for the computer, its peripherals, and the essential home systems.
Robotics is an interdisciplinary branch engineering and science that includes mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, computer science, and others. Robotics deals with the design, construction, operation, and use of robots, as well as computer systems for their control, sensory feedback, and information processing.
The types of robots based on application can be given as:
Industrial robots – Industrial robots are robots used in an industrial manufacturing environment. Usually these are articulated arms specifically developed for such applications as welding, material handling, painting and others. If we judge purely by application this type could also include some automated guided vehicles and other robots.
Domestic or household robots – Robots used at home. This type of robots includes many quite different devices such as robotic vacuum cleaners, robotic pool cleaners, sweepers, gutter cleaners and other robots that can do different chores. Also, some surveillance and telepresence robots could be regarded as household robots if used in that environment.
Medical robots – Robots used in medicine and medical institutions. First and foremost – surgery robots. Also, some automated guided vehicles and maybe lifting aides.
Service robots – Robots that don’t fall into other types by usage. These could be different data gathering robots, robots made to show off technologies, robots used for research, etc.
Military robots – Robots used in military. This type of robots includes bomb disposal robots, different transportation robots, reconnaissance drones. Often robots initially created for military purposes can be used in law enforcement, search and rescue and other related fields.
Entertainment robots – These are robots used for entertainment. This is a very broad category. It starts with toy robots such as robosapien or the running alarm clock and ends with real heavyweights such as articulated robot arms used as motion simulators.
Space robots – Robots used in space are generally as a separate type. This type would include robots used on the International Space Station, Canadarm that was used in Shuttles, as well as Mars rovers and other robots used in space.
Hobby and competition robots – Robots that you create. Line followers, sumo-bots, robots made just for fun and robots made for competition.
GIS mapping enables us to capture, store, manipulate and analyze geospatial data ie., information that has a geographic aspect to it, to produce maps and other graphic displays of geographic information for analysis and presentation.
LiDAR (Light Detection And Ranging) , a new technology in the field of topographical data collection with high speed, high density and accurate data. LiDAR scanning can occur day or night, as long as clear flying conditions are present; also have the capability to capture intensity reflectance data in addition to the x-y-z coordinates.
Flood risk mapping, oil and gas exploration surveys, engineering and construction, power line and pipeline corridor mapping, coastal zone mapping, real estate development, urban mapping, forestry, wetland, and other restricted access area mapping.
